Works of Elegance

Pope Francis

The completion of the sculpture led to a personal invitation for Xiaowen Chen to meet Pope Francis and present the work in person at the Vatican. After viewing the sculpture, Pope Francis expressed his appreciation for the artist’s interpretation and personally signed the back of the original work. For Chen, this moment represented far more than a ceremonial encounter. It was a meaningful affirmation of his artistic approach—one that seeks to capture not only physical likeness, but also the character, values, and spiritual presence of the individual.

Butterfly in Love with Flowers

Inspired by the graceful image of a butterfly in flight, Butterfly in Love with Flowers explores the harmony between art and nature. Half wing is formed as a sculptural stainless steel pavilion, creating a space for rest and gathering, while the other unfolds across the landscape through planting design and shifting patterns of light and shadow. Blurring the boundary between architecture, sculpture, and garden, the work invites visitors to experience the changing beauty of the seasons and the quiet dialogue between humanity and the natural world.

Ox for 70th anniversary

Created to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the founding of modern China, The Spirit of the Ox celebrates the values of strength, perseverance, and renewal. The sculpture incorporates the numerals “1949” into the form of the ox, marking the nation’s founding year, which also fell in the Chinese Year of the Ox. Originally conceived as a cultural gift for international dignitaries, the work reflects both national identity and the enduring spirit of progress.
